GGH Educational Series: CBD For Dogs
CBD is all that anyone is talking about these days, and as the number of CBD users increase, so are the number of pet owners that are becoming more and more aware of the powerful benefits that CBD has for their pets. However, it is important to understand why CBD works on pets, and most specifically in today’s blog, how it works on dogs.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) one of the many components found in the hemp plant, has extensive healing and balancing properties for all mammals. In fact, it has been used by pet owners have used it for various reasons such as cancer pain, arthritis, muscle spasms, seizures, neurological and digestive disorders, anxieties, obsessions, past traumas, withdrawal, mood, and memory. Human & Dog Similarities…
Like their owners, dogs also have a network of cell receptor proteins, cb1 and cb2 receptors , with many functions which are part of the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. The ECS is arguably the greatest neurotransmitter system in the body. It has the potential to affect :
The ECS has four primary functions which include: neuroprotection, stress recovery, immune balance and homeostatic regulation. CBD has the ability to interact with cells in our bodies, as well as our canines, because the molecules have similar composition to a chemical that our bodies produces naturally called endocannabinoids.
Unfortunately, as with humans the research behind using hemp-derived cannabidiol is limited to a small amount of peered-reviewed studies. In 2018, a clinical study was published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, the study “Pharmacokinetics, Safety, and Clinical Efficacy of Cannabidiol Treatment in Osteoarthritic Dogs,” aimed to document the effects of hemp-based cannabidiol products on a small sample of dogs. The results : decrease in canine pain. Increase in activity, and no observable side effects.
Canines don’t require high doses of CBD, however, because information on proper dosage is still in the works, veterinarians recommend starting at low dosages and slowly gauging how each individual dog responds. As a current guideline we recommend the dosages below.
Choosing The Right CBD Oil For Your Dog
As with humans, choosing the correct CBD oil is important, specially is a market with few to no regulations. Look out for:
Source of Hemp and CBD
Making sure that your pet’s CBD oil is derived from USA Industrial Organically Grown Hemp is imperative to the quality of the oil.
In order to maintain the benefits and guarantee purity of CBD oil the extraction process is extremely important. GoGreen Hemp uses a double extraction process in order to back up their quality.
Hemp Plan Vs. Hemp Seed
Although known for containing excellent source of protein and Omega 3,6 and 9 Hemp seeds do NOT contain CBD or any of the healthy cannabinoids found in the hemp plant itself.
CBD oil require a carrier oil, such as MTC (coconut oil) to be processed by the body. Making sure that there are no harmful mixing agents in your canines CBD oil will help preserve the health benefits of the CBD oil.
Although we aim to educate and provide sufficient material we always recommend and encourage pet owners to do their own research. The market for CBD products is booming, and with an expanding market comes risk. As research grows, we expect more and more people to become aware of the powerful benefits that CBD has to offer, and we will continue our mission to educate our community about these benefits.
