Does CBD Expire?
Updated: Jul 14, 2020
Does CBD expire? The straight forward short answer is yes. There are numerous variables that affect how slow or fast your CBD expires.
What is the Shelf Life of CBD?
The "shelf life" of CBD is the length of time that the products can be stored whether they are opened or not before they are considered unfit for use. CBD oils and CBD oil extracts have from about 12 months up to 24 months before it is concluded that it is unsuitable for use. Note that this time range is not definite as there are factors that play a role in determining the actual shelf life of a CBD product. Variables that impact the outcome and expiration of CBD oil and CBD oil extracts include but are not limited to, extraction method, product type, packaging, how well it is stored, whether it is exposed to heat or direct sunlight and what type of carrier oil is used.
So keeping these things in mind, once the CBD has been extracted from the flower, leaves, and stalk of the hemp plant, its potency, and "freshness zone" become a finite window. However, CBD's long shelf life will keep the many great benefits coming for months.
How To Tell If Your CBD Oil Expired?
If CBD is part of your day to day routine, chances are you will use all of your CBD before it expires. However, if you've used CBD and were not consistent with it and pushed it to the side, your CBD oil will lose potency over time and expire. As the CBD degrades, it will not be impactful if used at this point.
You can determine if your CBD product has expired based on your sense of taste and smell. Expired CBD oil will have an unpleasant taste and smell. Another way to tell if your CBD oil is expired and not subject your nose and taste buds to a harsh reality is to visually inspect the CBD oil. Expired CBD oil will lose its clarity and become murky and cloudy.
All reputable manufacturers of CBD will also have batch numbers and third party laboratory results which should say exactly when the product expires. We highly suggest looking for these batch numbers on your CBD products to ensure you know exactly what batch of production your products came from. This is just one of the many ways we are transparent in everything we do, from our extraction process to our speedy fulfillment.
How To Preserve The Shelf Life Of CBD Oil?
There is nothing that can keep CBD oil from eventually degrading. However, its potency, "freshness", and shelf life can be extended by limiting its exposure to certain elements. If you want to get the most out of your CBD products it is recommended that you keep them in a cool dry and dark place. Extended exposure to heat will cause CBD to degrade. It is best to store your CBD products at temperatures that do not exceed 70 degrees Fahrenheit but be careful not to store them at a temperature that is too cold because certain liquid extracts can turn solid. The potency of CBD is reduced when it is exposed to light. To further preserve your CBD oil, reduce its exposure to light as well.
As we do know that CBD oil expires, we also know that we can enjoy its benefit for a long time by storing it properly and purchasing quality products from reputable brands. Do your research and make sure that any CBD products you purchase have third party test results and full traceability from seed to extraction to finished product.
